Terms of Use

Last updated: September 25, 2026

The short version: Naikan is free to use. Your entries belong to you and stay on your device, so please export them now and then. Naikan is a tool for reflection, not therapy or medical care.

These terms apply to your use of the Naikan app ("Naikan," "the app"), made by Peter Ward ("I," "me"). By using Naikan, you agree to them. If you downloaded Naikan from the Apple App Store or Google Play, that store's terms also apply.

Using Naikan

You may use Naikan for your own personal, non-commercial reflection. Please don't copy, modify, reverse-engineer, or redistribute the app, except where the law allows it.

Not medical or mental health care

Naikan is a tool for self-reflection. It isn't therapy, counseling, or medical care, and it isn't a substitute for professional help. Nothing in the app is medical or psychological advice.

If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please contact local emergency services or a crisis line right away. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Outside the US, visit findahelpline.com.

Your content

Everything you write in Naikan belongs to you. It's stored only on your device, and I never receive it or any rights to it.

Because your entries exist only on your device, you're responsible for keeping a backup. Deleting the app, resetting your device, or losing it can permanently erase your entries, and I can't recover them. Use Export in Settings to save a copy.

The app is provided "as is"

I work hard to make Naikan reliable, but it's provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. I don't guarantee the app will be error-free or always available, or that data will never be lost.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, I'm not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of or inability to use Naikan. Some places don't allow these limitations, so they may not all apply to you.

Changes

I may update Naikan and these terms from time to time. If the terms change, I'll update this page and the date above. If you keep using Naikan after a change, you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
