Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 25, 2026

The short version: Naikan doesn't collect any data. Your entries are stored only on your device, and the app never sends them anywhere. There are no accounts, ads, analytics, or trackers.

This policy explains how the Naikan app ("Naikan," "the app") handles your information. Naikan is made by Peter Ward ("I," "me").

What stays on your device

Naikan stores the following only on your device, in the app's private storage:

None of this is sent to me or to anyone else. I have no way to see, access, or recover it.

What I collect

Nothing. Naikan has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics, advertising, or tracking tools. The app works fully offline.

Reminders

If you turn on daily reminders, Naikan asks your device for permission to show notifications. Reminders are scheduled locally on your device. They aren't sent from a server, and no notification data leaves your device.

Exporting

When you choose Export in Settings, Naikan creates a text file of your entries and opens your device's share menu. Where that file goes (Files, email, another app) is up to you, and it's then handled by whatever service you choose.

Device backups

Your phone's own backup system (such as iCloud Backup or Google's Android backup) may include Naikan's data along with your other apps, depending on your device settings. Those backups are managed by Apple or Google under their privacy policies, not by Naikan. You can control them in your device settings.

Crash reports

If you've chosen to share diagnostics with app developers in your device settings, Apple or Google may send me anonymous crash reports. These contain technical details about the problem and never include your journal entries.

Links to other websites

The About page links to outside websites, such as the ToDo Institute and crisis support services. Those sites have their own privacy practices.

Children

Naikan doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Deleting your data

You can delete individual entries from History. Deleting the app removes all of its data from your device.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, for example if optional features like cloud sync are added in the future, I'll update this page and the date above before the change takes effect. Any feature that sends data off your device will be optional and clearly explained in the app.
