Frequently asked questions

Where are my entries stored?

Only on your device. Naikan has no servers and never sends your entries anywhere. I can't see them, and neither can anyone else.

How do I back up my entries?

Open the menu, go to Settings, and tap Export. Naikan creates a plain-text (Markdown) file of all your entries that you can save to Files, email to yourself, or keep wherever you like. It's worth doing now and then.

What happens if I delete the app or get a new phone?

Deleting the app deletes your entries. Your phone's own backup (iCloud or Google) may carry them over to a new device, but don't count on it. Export a copy first.

My daily reminder isn't showing up.

Check that notifications are allowed for Naikan in your device settings, then turn the reminder off and on again in Naikan's Settings. On some Android devices, battery-saving modes can also delay notifications.

Can I delete an entry?

Yes. Open the entry from History and tap Delete.

Is Naikan therapy?

No. Naikan is a tool for reflection, not therapy or medical care. If you're struggling, please reach out to someone. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential support.
